What is gross pay (and how does it differ from net pay)?

Also known as: Gross salary, Gross income.

Gross pay is what an employee earns before any deductions are taken out: the headline figure on an offer or a contract, from which tax, social contributions and other withholdings are subtracted to arrive at the net pay that actually reaches the bank.

Gross is the number people quote and compare, because it is the same whoever is doing the sum. Net depends on an individual's tax position, so two people on the same gross can take home different amounts.

Because net depends on statutory rates that change and differ by country, Capstan does not compute it. The free calculators work in gross pay on figures you enter, and the statutory maths belongs to your payroll partner.

Capstan is the complete HR platform, free for teams up to twenty people.
